UniCredit Bank and the Reading Fluency and Comprehension research group of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pécs have joined forces to help disadvantaged children.

Reading is not just a subject, but a skill that is decisive both in childhood and as an adult. Those who get stuck in childhood also start with a disadvantage as adults.

With the financial support of our bank, the experts of the research group are conducting reading tests among school children in disadvantaged settlements in southern Hungary to determine what causes their reading comprehension problems, and then, with their coordination, one hundred affected children will receive personalized development plan from professionals.

Now you can help improve children's reading comprehension!

If you have a new or like-new storybook at home that you no longer need, please bring it to the storybook collection rack placed in our bank branches till October 8. During the autumn, we will deliver the books to institutions in disadvantaged areas so that reading can be an experience for as many primary school children as possible.

What kind of books are accepting?

• new or new, good condition storybooks exclusively, which you would be happy to give to your own child, too;
• storybooks for children aged 6-10;
• maximum 3 pcs. per customer.

What can we not accept?

• old, worn/yellowed, torn, incomplete, scribbled, books that are destined to be thrown away
• non-storybooks (e.g. pamphlets, youth novels, books for adults)
• books that are not intended for the 6-10 years old age group

Why do we do all this?

Successful school performance often has such everyday obstacles as the child not being able to interpret the text they read, so they have difficulty with writing and arithmetic as well, which causes significant disadvantages in everyday life when they grow up. The problem can be treated with early recognition and personalized development, but it is often inaccessible to families living in difficult financial circumstances. A study conducted by a research team  of the University of Pécs - with the support of UniCredit Bank - offers a solution to this.

The storybook donation complements the collaboration with the University of Pécs and UniCredit's Re-Power Your Future program, which supports equal opportunities for young people in school and aims to prevent early school leaving, and which has already helped the development of more than 31,000 children in more than 350 Hungarian schools by 2026.
