Environment

Environmental issues affect us all. UniCredit Bank is taking several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable environment. In particular, UniCredit's climate strategy to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our operations is a highlight. At group level, this initiative achieved a total reduction of 49% in 2018 compared to 2008 emissions. Our Group aims to reduce its carbon dioxide emission by 60% by 2020 and 80% in the longer term (2030).

Environmental Management System (EMS)

Our Environmental Management System provides a framework for all programs in this area, managing a process and decision-making system within Group subsidiaries. With environmental initiatives, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting sustainable development and achieving the Kyoto Protocol goals. Not only do we comply with applicable environmental laws, we also voluntarily commit ourselves to participating in initiatives and programs such as the use of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard or the application of the “Equatorial Principles”.

Earth Hour

We join WWF’s initiative ‘Earth Hour’ each year, switching off the lights and turning off electric equipment in our offices for an hour on the last Saturday of March. Our participation in this programme is in line with broader efforts to support sustainable development and the protection of the environment.

Sustainable procurement

The volume of banking related purchases is also significant from a climate protection point of view. Therefore, we consistently ensure that we comply with social and ecological standards in our procurement. These are defined in the UniCredit Group-wide “Supplier Certification” guidelines. Our suppliers are expected to contribute to climate protection, use resources sparingly, avoid or reduce waste, comply with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards, and consider health and safety impacts throughout the supply chain.

Support for paperless work

Since 2018, the digital signature service has been available in the entire branch network. As a result, instead of using huge amounts of paper, our colleagues now open accounts and initiate electronic services in a fully digitalised process. This improves the quality of services to our clients and also facilitates the work of our advisors in branch offices. We are continuously looking for additional products and services to include in the digital signature service in order to further reduce paper use.

Our further environmental initiatives

In the course of the renovation of branch offices, we modernize heating systems to reduce emissions. In Budapest, car-sharing services can be used to visit clients, and we have added electric cars to our fleet. We also place emphasis on awareness raising, and provide bicycle shelters to colleagues who ride their bikes to work.

We have a dedicated channel for information to our colleagues regarding this subject, and we involve our colleagues in sharing sustainability best practices.
